HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ BAND BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE AT DINNER TO BENEFIT AVERILL PARK MUSIC PROGRAMS

On Father’s Day, June 16, 130 community residents enjoyed a delicious barbecue dinner at the Burden Lake Country Club, accompanied by a terrific performance by the Averill Park High School Jazz Band. The event was sponsored by the Averill Park Education Foundation to benefit the Jazz Band and other music programs in our schools. Directed by Gerald Zaffuts, members of the band cut loose with a series of inspired improvisations, and were met with a standing ovation as the Class of 2002 made its farewell performance!

Special thanks to Gerald Zaffuts and the members of the Jazz Band, to Worthington Flowers for donating centerpieces, Screen-It for donating T-shirts, Miller’s Supermarket and the Burden Lake Country Club for providing cake, and to Ron and Tom Choquette and the staff of the BLCC for their help and cooperation in making a great evening.

EDUCATION FOUNDATION HELPS JAZZ PLAYERS HONE THEIR SKILLS

Using proceeds from the successful “All That Jazz” dinner held in June, the Education Foundation has awarded $300 to the High School Bands Fund for the purchase of practice CDs. Students in the Jazz Band will be able to take practice CDs to their homes. The CDs provide the accompaniment (piano, bass and drums) for classic jazz tunes from greats such as Ellington, Gershwin, and Miles Davis. This allows the student to practice the melody and, more important, to practice improvisation on the tune. We all look forward to more great performances from our excellent High School Jazz Band!
